Description:

Crystal is a kwin window decoration theme, which offers you (pseudo) TRANSPARENT titlebar, buttons and borders. Check out my screenshots! It also has some little usuability enhancements.

Main features:
* The style grabs your wallpaper and uses it as the deco background. It has several blending modes, i.e. it can fade the background into the defined title bar color, or it can brighten or darken the wallpaper, as well as blur the source image to simulate glass.
* Choose the blending color of the buttons.
* You can define the title bar height and border size of the windows.
* Right click on minimize button toggles shade mode.
* Middle click on minimize button sends window to below.
* Double click on program symbol closes window.
* Support for button themes. Basic button theme is included, feel free to swamp me with cool themes.
* Can show a tooltip of the caption
* Mouse-wheel on the title bar to 'scroll' to all opened windows of the same desktop.
* If kdocker is installed (http://kdocker.sf.net), right click on close button will send the window to the systemtray.

Disadvantages:
- Crystal needs KDE >=3.2 and QT>=3.2.
- May be very slow and memory consuming
- Don't forget to breathe, while drooling.

-- INSTALL ---------------------
Basic Installation (from the console):
- Step 1
$ ./configure
OR: $ ./configure --prefix=`kde-config --prefix`
- Step 2
$ make
- Step 3 (as root)
# make install

If you installed crystal while it was running, you need to restart kwin to use the updated version: kwin --replace
--------------------------------

Crystal in common distributions:
- Kubuntu: Crystal is the default decoration since 6.06
- Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install kwin-style-crystal
- Gentoo: emerge -a x11-themes/crystal
- Fedora: yum install crystal
- Debian: apt-get install kwin-style-crystal
- openSUSE: install from repository http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/Community/openSUSE_10.2
- FreeBSD: Port x11-themes/kde-windeco-crystal
- Mandriva: urpmi kwin-style-crystal

hmm nope, same background on all desktops. I'll try compiling this again and see if that helps :) Kwin is the only thing dealing with the desktops.

Maybe this will help:

in kcontrol:
Appearance & Themes -> Window Decorations -> General -> Moving repaints window -> Check "Immediately"

I think there's a bug where u can't configure the maximise button to maximise horizontally only when pressing right click. For middle click it's fine. This only occurs when the this windeco is applied. The setting involved is under Kcontrol>Window behaviour>Titilebar Actions> Maximise Button

I figure the bug is due to conflicts with similar options tweaked by the crystal windeco.

Otherwise it's a superb windeco!

Thank you for the hint. Right-click on the maximize button maximizes the window horizontally, middle click maximizes vertically. This is the default and it is working perfectly fine for me. Where do you have a problem?

But I noticed that the settings have absolutely no effect, that means you cannot set it to maximize vertically on right-click. I may fix this in the next release.

Ok, I am using suse 10.1, KDE 3.5, I see written here that it should not be a problem to install this package. I find it rather lovely. Problem being, when I try to install by suse rpm I get this error message "Installing crystal-1.0.1-1.i386[Local packages]
There are no installable providers of libexpat.so.0 for crystal-1.0.1-1.i386[Local packages]"

I tried then to install it with the tar.bz2, now, this is my first day ever using a linus dist other than knoppix, so there is a distinct possibility that I am just being dense here, but that told me "tar: 13969-crystal-1.0.1.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors"

Any suggestions?

And I apologize in advance is this is an idiocy problem... Thanks...

I forgot to mention, I did look back through the historz and try both the CD and website for the libexpat file. The CD told me it was installed, the website didnt find anz matched for the file...

There is a compat-expat-something package in SuSE that provides the very file and then it should work.

Is there a way to change the place of the buttons, so that there would be i.e a little space between the buttons and the top border?

Report

C

dralgebra

No. :( This is hardcoded in the button theme, how much space there is to the top border.

It is fixed size, yes, but that doesn't mean you can't change it. Just browse the source and you'll see what to change. For instance, try decreasing DEFAULT_IMAGE_SIZE in buttonimage.h

Even if you can't program, search for height/width x/y variables to change :)

Well done Doc! Damn fine work. I have it on SUSE 10.1, P4 3G, 2GB RAM, GF6200. It zips along with no lag whatsoever. Course the breathing and the drooling is a problem :-P Eat your heart out, Vista Willy ...

thanks for providing this very clean and neat decoration! The usual ones 'plastik' etc all have these oversized titlebars that just waste so much space.

This one is perfect! I'm using it on all my machines

Im trying to compile in mandriva powerpack+ 2006 but im not happy, the rpm not run. Please help me to compile or install this deco in my kde (3.4). When im compile (make) it send some errors.

Report

Yes, my rpm won't work, because it is comiled under KDE 3.5, so it is not binary compatible with 3.4.

Please send me the error messages via email. I think, you miss some header files, which are in the messages. Search for the packages in Mandriva and install the package that provides the missing header files.

If you can't finf it on a CD/DVD loook at http://rpm.pbone.net and mark packages only for SuSE.

Sorry, you need the expat-compat package. search for expat in the SuSE package manager. SuSE 9.3 and SuSE 10.1 packages seem not to be that compatible. But then it should work.
